Chapter 1

The Dam on the Rotte: Origins to 1500

Around 1270, a small group of settlers built a dam across the river Rotte — a modest waterway draining the low-lying peat bogs of what is now the Dutch province of South Holland. That single engineering decision gave the future city its name: Rotte plus dam equals Rotterdam. Before the dam existed, there was no settlement worth naming. After it, there was a reason for one.

The Rotte ran roughly north to south before emptying into the Maas, one of the major rivers cutting through the Low Countries toward the North Sea. The dam did two things at once. First, it controlled flooding: the peat land behind it stayed workable rather than waterlogged. Second, it created a sheltered harbor on the Maas side, where flat-bottomed river boats could load and unload without fighting the current. Fishermen working the Maas and herring traders moving along the coast found the spot convenient. A small village took hold on the bank.

The economy of that village rested on two products: fish and peat. Peat is partially decomposed plant matter, cut from bogs and dried into fuel blocks — the medieval equivalent of coal. The bogs stretching inland from the Maas were rich with it, and the dam gave boats direct access to those bogs via the Rotte. Cut the peat, load it onto a river boat, float it to the dam, transfer it to a sea-going vessel on the Maas side, and send it to market in the towns of Holland or Flanders. Rotterdam was, in its first century, essentially a transit point for bog fuel.

This geography — sitting where a small river meets a major one, near an estuary opening to the sea — is the structural fact that explains almost everything in Rotterdam's later history. The Maas estuary (the wide tidal mouth where the river broadens and meets the sea) gave Rotterdam access to oceanic trade routes even though the city sat inland. A vessel leaving Rotterdam could reach Dordrecht, Antwerp, or London without ever leaving sheltered water. That mattered enormously in an era when open-sea sailing was slow and dangerous.
