BNB: An Introduction

Binance Chain, BEP-20 Tokens, and the Burn Mechanism — A TLDR Primer

Crypto moves fast, and BNB is everywhere — but most explainers either drown you in jargon or skip the details that actually matter. Whether you're studying blockchain for a class, trying to understand what your portfolio is holding, or just tired of nodding along when people talk about gas fees and token burns, this guide cuts straight to what you need to know.

A concise primer with no filler. You'll learn what BNB is and how it grew from a simple exchange discount token into the native currency of one of the world's largest blockchain ecosystems. The guide walks through the two-chain architecture of BNB Chain, explains how BEP-20 tokens work and how gas fees are paid, and breaks down the burn mechanism and tokenomics — including the Auto-Burn formula and BEP-95 real-time burns — in plain language with real numbers. It also covers the actual uses of BNB across trading, DeFi, staking, and payments, and closes with a neutral look at the SEC and DOJ cases, the CZ guilty plea, and what regulatory scrutiny means for the network going forward.

This is a cryptocurrency guide for high school students, early college readers, and anyone who wants a fast, honest orientation — not a 400-page textbook and not a hype piece. If you've been searching for a binance smart chain beginner guide that respects your time and doesn't talk down to you, this is it.

Pick it up and get oriented in one sitting.

Chapter 1

What Is BNB?

In July 2017, a new cryptocurrency exchange launched with a fundraising sale that raised $15 million in about two weeks. That exchange was Binance, and the token it sold to fund itself — BNB — is now one of the largest cryptocurrencies in the world by market value. Understanding BNB means understanding what problem it was built to solve, how it outgrew that original purpose, and what role it plays in the broader crypto ecosystem today.

Changpeng Zhao, almost universally known by his initials CZ, is the founder of Binance. Born in China and raised partly in Canada, CZ worked in traditional finance and then in cryptocurrency infrastructure before launching Binance in Shanghai. He ran the exchange through its rise to the top of global crypto trading volume — a position it held for years — before stepping down as CEO in 2023 as part of a legal settlement with U.S. authorities (more on that in section 6). CZ's public persona — direct, active on social media, and consistently bullish on Binance's products — shaped Binance's brand during its growth years.

From ICO to Exchange Token

BNB started life as an ICO token — a token sold in an Initial Coin Offering, which is a fundraising method where a company sells newly created cryptocurrency tokens to the public in exchange for established currencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum. In Binance's ICO, 80 million BNB tokens were sold at roughly $0.10 each. Another 40 million went to the founding team, and 80 million were allocated to angel investors and the project reserve, for a total initial supply of 200 million BNB.

At launch, BNB was technically an ERC-20 token — meaning it lived on the Ethereum blockchain and followed Ethereum's token standard. This is a common starting point for new projects: Ethereum was already established, its infrastructure was reliable, and developers knew how to build on it. BNB didn't have its own blockchain yet; it was simply a token running on someone else's network.
